On April 29, eight girls and boys students from the Francoise Dolto school in Oaxaca suffered second and third degree burns during a celebration for Children’s Day. According to state educational authorities, this school had been operating since 2024 in secrecy, at an unauthorized address different from the one declared and without the corresponding official key.
The State Institute of Public Education of Oaxaca (IEEPO) reported that in 2024, the school management requested certification for their students upon discovering that they were not authorized to conduct academic activities. However, that same year, the key was suspended and the establishment was closed for failing to meet requirements.
The head of IEEPO indicated that in 2023, a call had been issued to all schools to regularize their academic status and 79 school keys were canceled due to irregularities. In this context, the governor of Oaxaca, Salomón Jara Cruz, announced a thorough investigation into the conditions of private schools in the state following the incident at the Francoise Dolto school.
Regarding the unfortunate event, the district attorney of Oaxaca, Bernardo Rodríguez Alamilla, reported that there are six complaints for injuries and more than 50 expert evidence pieces. One of the affected minors was transferred to a specialized burn hospital in Houston, United States. So far, no individuals have been detained in connection with this case.
The mothers and fathers of the victims demanded justice for what happened, asserting that it was due to negligence during the celebration. On social media, a photo of one of the injured girls circulates, along with an account number where her family is requesting help to cover the medical expenses for her recovery.
